Ab Workout Routine
Would it sound weird if I tell you the best ab workout routine is the one that doesn’t workout just the abs? Or that for attaining a prized six pack, you have to focus less on your abs and more on other exercises? No, I haven’t lost it (yet!); not only is the above true, it’s also the fastest way to lose fat and build a lean, fit body, complete with a perfect set of abs.
Okay, if you are with me now, I will explain an ideal ab workout routine, along with some secret cardio exercises. Yeah, I know most of you are still stuck with the treadmill and elliptical trainer! And of course, all these will not help if I don’t tell you about the fat combating foods that will torch away all your unwanted body fat, giving way to lean muscle.
For a good ab workout routine, add as many big lifts as you can in your weight training. By big lifts, I mean compound exercises with heavy weights. Compound exercises such as presses, chins, squats and deadlifts will raise your metabolism, and doing them with heavy weights for 5-8 reps will ensure your metabolism is kicking away all your fat and developing muscle simultaneously. Hitting your legs, back and shoulders will do more for your abs than direct ab exercises.
Other compound lifts to include in your ab workout routine could be push ups, pull ups and bench presses-basically all exercises that activate more than one muscle group to aid the lift. You may add a few sets of crunches and setups but keep them at a minimum, while focusing more on the above ones.
A 3-4 days per week ab workout routine works wonders for your body, irrespective of your fitness goals. But if you have a real weight problem, you may want to include a highly specialized version of cardio in your non-weight training days.
What I am going to talk about is High Intensity Interval Training, a version of cardio in which we vary the rate of our work at random times. So, if you are doing hill sprints (good choice!), start with a fast paced jog for a few minutes and suddenly run as fast as possible for a few seconds. Come back to your jog (which is actually a rest!), only to resume running extremely fast again for a short burst. If you like to do your interval training in the gym, you can do this on a stationary bike too. Don’t forget to carry a water bottle and a towel. You will need them both badly!
Do this for a few sets on alternate days and I promise, you will come back to thank me!
The one aspect that keeps many guys from achieving a dream body despite having a well-rounded abs workout routine is their diet. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of food if you are trying to lose weight. Contrary to what most people believe, you need to eat more to lose more-in small portions and with more frequency. Your kitchen should be filled with veggies, fruits of all colors, lean meats, all kinds of nuts and skimmed milk dairy products.
Also, if you can, buy a cheap hand blender and you will be all set to prepare healthy smoothies, juices, shakes (any good health site will have recipes for these) that you can proudly offer to your friends and family too.
The above ab workout routine and foods will work fantastically well if you commit to following them for a while. For a more exhaustive guide covering tons of effective exercises and healthy meal plans, all of which will help you achieve a six pack, check out the Truth About Abs program.
